Fads of the Year!

June 6th, 2011

For the past few months, I’ve been writing to you about what’s going on in the world. Now it’s your turn to tell me what’s going in yours!

As the school year winds down, two brothers in New York, Graham and Owen, decided to take a look back at the fads that sizzled … then fizzled.

Did your school have the same fads? Or different ones? Which ones did you like? Or not? I’d love to know! You can write a comment at the end. Have your own story idea? Let me know that, too!

Here’s Graham and Owen, in their own words:

Graham and Owen are attending elementary school in NY. Graham’s in 2nd grade and might just be a hip-hop dancer when he grows up. Owen’s an awesome builder and is interested in being a Lego designer. He’s finishing up 4th grade. As enthusiastic participants in some of the fads, they came up with this story idea and wrote it for HTE all on their own! Awesome. Thanks, guys!

Awesome fads story. I don’t think I knew about plural possessives until much later in life. But it is sure nice to know that school fads are still going strong (the only one I can remember from 50 years ago were Pez Dispensers).

Hi Graham and Owen! We’ve never met but you’ve probably heard of me. I met up with your mom and other friends in South Africa last summer for the World Cup. I live in an igloo up here in Canada, which is unfortunately starting to melt now that we’re having some warm weather. I remember three fads when I was in elementary school in the 1970s. Fad #1: The banana seat bike! That’s right, it’s a bike seat shaped like a banana and helped an entire generation of kids develop bad posture. Fad #2: Star Wars action figures. These became the bomb after the release of the original Star Wars film in 1977. Boys collected Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader and Chewbacca, while girls preferred Princess Leia and, for some reason, Han Solo. Fad #3: Adidas bags. In the 1970s, square-shaped Adidas bags with handles were all the rage for carrying our books, homework, Star Wars action figures and banana seats that broke off our bikes when we wiped out. We carried our bags on our backs like knapsacks by sliding our arms through the handles.

Hi Owen and Graham. I enjoyed your story. I went through all the same fads at my school in Philadelphia. I am in first grade. We also weren’t aloud to bring our silly bands into school after a while!
