Forever Stamps

January 22nd, 2011

Do you know how much it costs to mail a letter? Right now, it’s 44 cents. The cost to mail a letter goes up by a few cents every couple of years or so. But now the postal service is issuing stamps called “Forever” stamps which means that you can buy them for the price they’re worth now and you can use them forever, even if the price goes up in the future! The idea is that if you buy more than you need today, in a few years when it may cost 50 cents, for example, to mail a letter, you’ll have planned ahead and saved yourself a little bit of money.

There is a whole series of designs for them, that’s also the first time they’ve done that …. the first one was issued this past Saturday and it shoes the Lunar New Year: Year of the Rabbit stamp. In a few days they’ll have another choice that commemorates the state of Kansas and in February the stamp will celebrate the former and late President Ronald Reagan’s 100 th birthday.
