Canadians elected a new leader last night!

Justin Trudeau won in a landslide. (pronounced: True-doh)

Canada’s leader is called a prime minister .

Canada is the United States’ neighbor to the north. It’s the second largest country in the world by land but has only 1/10 of the population of the U.S.

With this election, Canada’s current prime minister, Stephen Harper, was voted out of office. He had been the prime minister for the past ten years — one of the longest serving leaders in the western world. Canada doesn’t have the same limits as the United States for how long you can be the country’s leader.

Mr. Trudeau’s opponents had campaigned that at age 43 Mr. Trudeau was too young and inexperienced to be prime minister using the slogan: Justin is just not ready.

Before getting into politics he  sampled many other jobs   — teacher, actor, engineering student, charity boxer, snow boarding instructor and even bungee-jumping assistant!

But he has been around politics his whole life. Justin Trudeau’s father, Pierre Trudeau, was the prime minister of Canada when Justin was a child. Pierre Trudeau is also one of the most legendary and famous Canadian prime ministers ever.

There were three main political parties in this election.  Justin Trudeau is with the Liberals. Mr. Harper is with the Conservatives. And the NDP (New Democratic Party) is led by Tom Mulcair.
