Kicking Queen

October 4, 2011 — 18-year old Michigan high school senior, Brianna Amat, had an amazing night on Friday.

She was crowned homecoming queen at halftime during the Pinckney Pirates boys’ high school football game … and then went on to win the game as the team’s kicker! She kicked a 31-yard field goal, her personal best, to help Pinckney win the game, 9-7, against Grand Blanc.

Though the game was close and the opponent strong, Ms. Amat seemed to have higher expectations of winning the football game than being crowned queen, saying she didn’t think “in a million years” she’d win the title. The kick, however nerve-wracking, she said she’d practiced thousands of times.

During halftime, Ms. Amat had to be summoned from the locker room wearing her football uniform to be announced queen, while her fellow nominees wore dresses.

Then, trading her tiara for her helmet she headed back to the game. She credits playing soccer from the age of 3 with her football success, as well as her accepting teammates, and supportive coaches. She is the school’s first female varsity football player and also stars on the girl’s soccer team.

How did she celebrate her wins? The 4.0 grade point average student reportedly went straight to bed having to get up early the next morning in her role as the student government’s treasurer to help decorate for the homecoming dance!
