What Is The Scope Of Our Privacy Policy?

This Privacy Policy addresses our policies and procedures relating to the personal information of individuals who visit our site and provide information related to activities on our site. This Privacy Policy is intended to assist you in understanding HTE’s policies and procedures relating to our management of personal information. HTE is committed to protecting the privacy and confidentiality of personal information entrusted to us. More specifically, we are committed to protecting the safety and wellbeing of children, and we continually work to ensure that our data collection practices conform to all applicable laws, including the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

What Is Personal Information?

The term “personal information” is a legally defined term and means individually identifiable information about an individual collected online, including, but not limited to – (1) first and last name; (2) home or other physical address, including street name and name of a city or town; (3) an e-mail address; (4) a telephone number; (5) a social security number; (6) any other identifier that the Federal Trade Commission determines permits the physical or online contacting of a specific individual.

Personal Information Collected by HTE

We only collect enough information from our visitors to make activities on HTE fun and interesting.

– In almost all instances, the information we collect is non-personal (such as first name only, age and name of city, town, state or country).

– If you submit a comment after an article, enter a contest or send us a question, we will also ask for an email address. When we do ask for personal information (like an e-mail address) as part of an activity, we will only use it for that activity and keep it only until that activity is complete. For example: if you send us an e-mail with a question or a comment, we will respond using the e-mail address you provide, but we will not keep the address or use it again for any other purpose. On the other hand, if you sign up for our newsletter, your e-mail address will be stored for the limited purpose of sending the newsletter to the address provided.

– If you submit stories, artwork, comments or anything else to us that is posted on HTE’s website, you will be identified on our site only by first name, age, city and state.
– (See additional information regarding parental consent and notification below).

Participation Conditioned On Providing Personal Information

No one will be excluded from our site for not giving us personal information and HTE will not condition an individual’s participation in an activity on that individual disclosing more personally identifiable information than is reasonably necessary to administer the activity.

Verifiable Parental Consent and Notification

For certain online activities, we may require verifiable parental consent before collecting or using personally identifiable information from children under the age of (13) thirteen. For these activities, HTE will seek a parent’s permission before we collect, use, store or disclose any personal information supplied by a child under the age of (13) thirteen. When your child is asked to provide personal information, we will first collect your (the parent’s) email address and use this information to contact you (the parent) by email to notify you that your child wishes to provide personally identifiable information to us, describe the purposes for which the personal information is collected, and provide you with an opportunity to opt-out of the collection of the information. We will also allow parents to review any personal information we may collect from children under (13) thirteen and to request that we stop using and delete such information at any time. Parents can request to review or have deleted their child’s personally identifiable information from HTE, and refuse to permit further use of a child’s personally identifiable information by e-mailing to us at If our policies change with regard to personal information that we previously received parental consent to collect, we will notify the parents of the changed policies.

Use of IP Addresses and Cookies

We may collect IP addresses to obtain aggregate information on the use of HTE’s website. An IP address is a number assigned to your computer by a Web server when you’re on the Web. We only use the information we find out from tracking IP addresses in the aggregate, such as how many users entered a specific area of our site, and not to track a specific IP address to identify an individual user. Aggregated information is information that cannot be associated with or traced back to a specific person. We may disclose anonymous, aggregated information about our website to third parties. In addition, to help us better understand our market, we may gather demographic information for analytical purposes on an anonymous, aggregate basis. This information is not kept, used or disclosed at the individual level, but may be disclosed to third parties on anonymous, aggregate basis. However, we may use such information to identify a user if we feel that there are or may be safety and/or security issues or to comply with legal requirements. HTE may also collect information that is stored in cookies. Cookies are small pieces of information stored on your hard drive, not on our Websites. We may use cookies for a number of reasons, including using the information from cookies to deliver relevant local resources, remember browser preferences, and improve our visitors’ experiences on the site. Cookies also help us to tailor messages that better match your needs and interests, and they allow us to better understand how users in general use our sites, which in turn helps us to focus our resources on features that are most popular with our users. You are always free to decline our cookies if your browser permits, but some parts of our sites may not work properly if you do. HTE does not sell information collected by cookies or use the information for commerce-related purposes.

Sharing Of Information With Third Parties

HTE does not share any personal information that you provide with any third parties unless those third parties are engaged by us to maintain the technical functioning of our website or web service. These service providers are only given the information needed to perform those services and they are bound contractually to protect the privacy and security of your information and to limit the use of your information to the service being provided. We may also disclose personal information to the government or other legal or regulatory authorities if so ordered by a court of law or pursuant to a valid subpoena.

Links to other sites

Visitors will find links from HTE’s site to independently owned, controlled and/or managed internet sites whose content we have found of possible interest to our visitors. While we initially visit these sites to which we directly link, please note that we do not monitor or control the content that appears on these sites and such content may be constantly changing. We recommend that children check with their parents before clicking off to any new sites and we encourage all users of HTE to read the privacy policies of all linked sites before navigating through them.

Acceptance Of Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy outlines the information usage practices of HTE. By accessing, browsing or using this Website or by submitting your personal information to HTE, you signify your agreement to the terms and conditions of this policy. If you do not agree to this policy, please do not submit your personal information to us. We reserve the right, at our discretion, to change, modify, add or remove portions of this Policy at any time. If at some point in the future, there is a material change to our information usage practices that affects your personal information, you will be notified of such change by a conspicuous posting on the Websites and will be prompted to elect whether or not you agree to the change. Your acceptance of a revised policy, which may be communicating by clicking to indicate your consent for the continued provision of your personal information to HTE following the effective date of any changes to this Privacy Policy shall mean that you have accepted those changes, subject to your continuing right to notify us at any time as to how you would like us to treat your personal information.
